Just a quick post to let everyone know that Gipsy Moth IV is wheeling her way to Gosport on the back of a low loader, she left Greenwich just before 5pm this evening.

Thanx to the UKSA she'll be sea worthy again and should be scooting down the M3 to Camper and Nicholson who'll wave their magic and get her ready for her 40th bithday

Used to live near Greenwich, and often walked round the river front where poor Gipsy Moth was incarcerated in a hole in the promenade; very sad sight. I am very glad that such an important yacht is going to be restored and actually sail again. Good luck to everyone involved.

Great to see her go on the first leg of her new voyage, she was a terrible mess and not getting better. And the poor old Maritime Museum were often blamed for it, but in fact were neither the owners nor responsible. Incidentally, YM suggested that donations were welcome via the UKSA site; I have tried and have not received any reply. Hope they buck up or the revenue won't top up.

Sorry to hear you couldn't find anyone to take your donation, The UKSA should have an ability for on line donations by this evening. Meanwhile e-mails are dealt with individually by Frank Fletcher. Anybody who calls any other number at UKSA saying the magic words “I want to make a donation to gipsy moth” can make an over the phone transaction.

I hope that helps

G

Fingers x'd that C&N don't find anything too horrific when they start to strip her down.

Only thing that worries me is that the blessed Sir Francis reckoned she was a dog of a boat and his least favourite GM.

Use that talent!

Can you ask whoever achieved this to turn their attention to recovering the GBR Challange campaign?

Re: Use that talent!

You could probably build a new fleet of Gipsy Moth IV's, revive the original and have them all race on Chichester's route to Auatrailia and back for the price of running a 1 boat AC campaign!! :-)

Gipsy Moth 1V - Good Design?

According to Francis Chichester's account "Gipsy Moth Circles the World", a great story, it cost 50% more than originally costed & not the best of designs according to his account.
Even after many changes, as he set off - "There were so many things that worried me-as they were to worry me throughout the voyage---".
A brave man.
What info/thoughts on this yacht do others have?

Re: Gipsy Moth 1V - Good Design?

I vaguely remember seeing a quote from Illingworth on the lines of "She would have been a much better boat if Chichester hadn't been continually butting in and also changing his mind."

There was some good BBC TV news coverage today. GM is already under cover lots of rot but nothing unexpected.

Restoration period will be 6 months.
