I have a friend doing up his galley in his 40 foot cruising yacht. Yesterday we had an argument as to whether he should gimbal his stove/ oven (its gas) or not. I say yes he says no.
What do you say?

Bear in mind he cruises only, does not race, but sails extensively offshore where it can and does get rough I have sailed with him in some rough conditions and on many occasions have picked the toast up off the floor or worse still, scrapped the evening meal off the deck.

Opinions please

No brainer

I understand his thinking but think of the following scenario:

You come out of the hamble on a lovely sunny day in a F1-2. Glassy seas ahead and you put the kettle on for a cup of tea. Your friend sits at the table looking at an almanac.

Along comes a powerboat a 15 knots and sends your boat bouncing up and down and the kettle jumps off covering your friend in hot water.

Definately get a gimble. When you have them, you forget how good a device it really is.

Had to be a motor boat, eh! couldn't be a big ferry or something? You really like winding up the stinkies, don't you!!!

I cooked for a few thousand miles aboard a 49 footer which had the galley forward; she had a two burner Taylors, not gimballed but with a length of spring wire and two hooks to keep the pots on, and a single burner Primus, gimballed, for when it was really vile. It was seldom necessary to use the gimballed stove.

I think a lot will depend on how violent this particular boat's motion is. I often cook on our coal stove - stews and such, and boil kettles, and that certainly is not gimballed, but the stews can go on in a pressure cooker.

There is a respectable case for not gimballing a stove, although I confess my Taylors is gimballed!

Mines not gimballed either, but its also sited across the boat, and my boat hardly heels atall, 10 degrees is excessive! But on a small boat, that heels more than 20 degrees, I'm not convinced you don't need gimbals.
