I have had one for six or seven years and overall I am very happy with it. I find it does the job well and has always kept me dry, and I have been out in some very wet and windy weather, both on long daysails on the yacht and in the club rescue ribs. Sometimes I prefer something a little lighter though.
Lots of useful pockets and fleecy handwarmers. The hanging loop has broken and the wrist reflectors came off, and the hood tends to cover my eyes a bit. Not as light or as breatherable as some of the fancy modern (expensive) fabrics. The difference in use between this and an "offshore" rated jacket is in the length of exposure to severe conditions that they can remain waterproof in.
Not sure it's a 'coast', but I have a Gill w/proof jacket, yellow shoulders / upper & dark blue lower, fairly high collar, handwarmer pockets; I use it for ashore in rain, but it's brilliant, I often think how much better value it was than my Musto Ocean.
Most of my sailing is done from April to October time so there is little chance of being exposed to the really cold months.
Up to now I have been using my goretex walking/climbing jacket, the main problem with this is a lack of a warm, stiff collar and the fabric seems to be easily ripable ( I have had a few close shaves)
Also, would anyone say its definatley worth spending the extra £80 and going for the 0s2 jacket or will the plain coast one be fine.
My sailing is mostly in the wash and North norfolk coast, with occasional trips out of Inverness.
We only sail 1st April to 31st October on the East Coast - my wife has a Musto MPX suit which cost £700 which she loves - I have the basic Gill suit which cost £180 and I am equally happy with it....couldnt justify spending the extra cash, its just as waterproof and if it gets cold I just put an extra layer underneath - it works for me!!
