Gifted - Evinrude Outboard

Hi, Someones given me an old 15Hp Evinrude outboard that was sitting in a garage (its in great condition). I was going to send it away to get it serviced and working however, having tracked down the model number 158B64B it seems it circa 1971

Question: Given its so old, do you think its worth getting it working or is it going to be more hassle than its worth?

Definitely more hassle than it's worth.

I'll do you the favour of getting rid of it/taking it off your hands. When can I pop up and collect it?

plus..the carb and such of the 15hp is sort after as people use the parts to upgrade their 9.9hp..

That is a 1978 model! Standard shaft length and Belgium made.

If its is good condition well worth getting it going. Practically all parts are still available mailorder from places like Oakley Marine ( aka Outboards direct) in Brighton or Willsmarine in Kingsbridge. Other dealers too.

lol I would love to see that engine with 4000 hours on it!

old outboards are like old cars, great fun to tinker with and nice projects and its not about the cost of getting it going, its about the fun you have trying.

so if tinkering is your thing then yes go for it otherwise the cost, let alone time will far more than its worth let alone your time

I am a Caribbean liveaboard and when I bought my boat it came with a 1978 15 hp Johnson [ same as Evinrude - badge engineering ] for the dink.

For the last three years that engine had been my daily driver.

3rd pull when cold 1 st pull after that. In 3 years all it needed was a new set of plugs once a year and I replaced the starter cord.

Do I still have it NO! WHY because in St Barts some thieving barsteward passed up two new and unsecured Honda 4 strokes to cut my security wire and steal my old Johnson!

I don't know about the one the OP has but mine was a good un.

Very sorry to heard that. So you could have had your "old" engine for ten years again. Not always the case but I am starting to believe that old outboards can outlive newer and better designed ones. I will stick to my antiques.
