"GIB HOSTS FIRST INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW
by Alice Mascarenhas
Gibraltar will host its first International Boat Show over the Easter weekend, 9 – 12 April. A marina based event in the Ocean Village complex its main sponsor is Lloyds TSB International Private Banking. It has the backing of a number of other sponsors and the backing of the Gibraltar Tourist Board. Aside from a series of events planned for the weekend the show hopes to attract celebrities from the UK whom will participate in a celebrity football match against a joint Armed Forces/Gibraltar Football Association team. Some of the names on the list include Olympic sprinter Darren Campbell, ex Portsmouth Tottenham and England player Darren Anderton, Ralph Little from The Royals, and both Holly Oakes and Coronation Street personalities.

The organisers hope to attract all the top brand names in the industry, and have already secured the participation of manufacturers Sun Seeker, one of the major players. Already the event is being promoted in the UK and Spain hoping attract as many people as possible to the Rock over the Easter weekend.
John Wood, Gibraltar International Boat Show Consultant, at the launch yesterday at Ocean Village said Gibraltar was pivotal to putting the boat show on the map, and would provide the perfect opportunity for visitors to start the season afloat on the latest ready-to-buy models being delivered to the Mediterranean.
The event has been made possible he said “thanks to the unwavering backing of Gibraltar’s Government and Tourist Board we have every faith that this year’s event will be a springboard for many successful Gibraltar International Boat Shows to come.”
The first boat show will offer buyers the opportunity to see, sign and take boats on the day straight to their marinas – like a one stop show and shop that will “focus on everyday people who buy yachts,” explained Mr Wood. There will be seminars offering advice on the benefits of registering a boat in Gibraltar, a learning area where people can learn to kayak, dive, and sail, and offering other water activities. Entrance will be free for the general public, and will also help to fundraise for the charities MENCAP and Help For Heroes. "

I have just made a few calls and Sunseeker and Pershing are confirmed with more to come.

Cheap flights from LGW, Luton and Manchester to Gib or go to Malaga and hire a car!

Cheers

I know...this piece was gutter Journalism based at the non-boaty types here in Gib! I cringed as well (although the Hollyoaks babes are welcome /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif)

I think there will be a release on IBI or maybe MBM!

I take it Mr Wood has very little idea about the boat buying process or the people who buy them.

When we went on a P and O cruise last November stood in the queue almost next us was no other personage than Liz Dawn - aka Vera Duckworth.

Although almost soap "royalty" she stood in the queue with the rest of us poor people - laughting along with people who were doing a double take and joking that, yes, she knew she was supposed to be dead.

My husband who hates soaps with a vengance (I live for them) was very impressed with her attitude.

We would go to the show as we need to do a visit to Gib to visit one of our customers (we ferry to Santander and then drive down to Gib) there but we are off on a cruise.

To those of you who do go I can recommend the Rock Hotel - we had a brilliant stay there last time.
