Anyone ever serviced one of these? My Halcyon 23 has two which are getting stiff (no problems for years but I suppose I deserve it for not doing it earlier.) PBO had an article on wich servicing but these Gibb winches don't look quite like the ones they used as generic examples.

hi
no probs
assume there single spd
carefully take one apart, remember / note where the various parts came from ( u can always refer back to the other one ) wash out all parts in paraffin dry with clean lint free cloth , lightly grease & or light oil as nessesary, re-assemble.
it isnt rocket science just be carefull with "pawl" springs & take your time.
i do mine every year.
good luck

thanks sailorman but how do i take them apart? Although I've rebuilt engines, servcie my own diesel and I'm reasonably handy, i've always found knowing a bit helps avoid going off in the wrong direction. There is a collar with 'gibb' on it that looks like it might prise off (should it or will I find that after attacjking it with scredriver i've damagesd it and shouldn't have touched it? at the bottom of the handle opening i can see a screw......do I remove that and pull - if it's supposed to come off i'll keep pulling but i have no idea of the way these are put together!

i have waited until the boat is due out of the water so i don't drop bits overboard as is my wont, but i wouldn't mind a clue as to how to start.....

My Gibb 9CR winches have a slotted head screw at the bottom of the handle socket. Just undo that and carefully lift up the barrel. All benig well, nothing should fall off but put [rotection round the winch in case it does. NB my winches have a plain hex socket, not a fancy one with a star appearance as they are very old. Yours may be different.

When I replaced mine (captive handle at bottom) I only had to undo the one screw at the bottom of the socket. Yours is probably similar.
To avoid dropping small items that seem to come alive as soon as you start to lift the drum, try cutting a hole in the bottom of a cardboard box so that it is a close fit to the base. If something does fall out it will only fall into the box, although if they are single speed there is not much to fall out!
DO NOT apply too much grease during reassembly. If you use Keenol - or some similar white goo - it should be so thinly smeared that you can barely see any colour.
Mine were a bit stiff because the alloy had expanded the plastic 'bearing' inwards. A very light skimming on the lathe soon cured that problem.
The old Gibbs are now fitted to the mast for halliard duty as the handle cannot fall overboard. Tightening the luff is really easy as I can now sit on the coachroof and ratchet the handle to and fro with one hand and tail with the other.
But you knew all that already.

Yes! Just undo the screw and then very carefully ease the winch barrel upwards (you may need to gently prise it against the baseplate). Do it slowly otherwise the rollers and their cages will cascade to the table/floor/cockpit, along with the spring loaded pawls.

Once you get the barrel off the internal arrangements are pretty straight forward but do very carefully note the arrangement of the pawls and springs as noted above.

With a wash and some WD40 mine now spin!

Just worth buying a little service kit of spare springs an pawls - they vanish so easily - I also use winch grease - very sparingly applied - Most winches will only go back together in one way - the correct way - except Lewmar where if its wrong you know immediatly you have re-assembled it!
