Allegretto (a Sadler 32) has two self tailing Gibb winches..
One for the genoa furling and one for the cunningham downhaul.
Although they're not used like the sheet winches I need to service them.
Can anyone tell me how to remove the drums? They appear to be fixed by what is probably best called the rope "stripper" which is a red plastic blade which goes from a stainless pillar into the self tailing groove... Even after taking the circlip off the drum and exposing the "cams/dogs" I cannot get to the bearings because the drum is held by the stripper...
Don't seem to be able to find a site on the web so I pestering you lot!!!
Any help welcomed...
Cheers Bob E..

Serviced mine yesterday. The rope stripper pivots outwards, both to allow the rope to be fed on and off the winch and to remove the drum. If it doesn't rotate then it has seized, so spray with WD 40 then try and ease out, it has a plastic plug with splines and a spring at the base and they are inclined to break fairly easily.

Also when removing the drum, as well as the two pawls under the cover plate at the top, there are another 2 in the base of the drum, which if they stick as you lift the drum can fly off so be carefull not to loose them, tape a polythene bag around the bottom or similar.
