During August I was motoring between Islay and Coleraine. On my radar screen I could see Rathlin and the north Irish coast. I was traveling at 28 knots and was in collision course with a massive ship which I could clearly see about four miles away. (Obviously I altered course to pass astern of the ship which was the size of four massive ships) It was a flat calm sea on a beautifully clear evening but this humungus piece of floating steel never even blinked on my radar screen. Does anyone know do jrc 1000's ignore big ships. I could have been in deep po if I had been in poor weather conditions of slight mist.

Are you sure it was only four miles away and within radar range - on a calm day with the right atmospherics you can get refraction which does all sorts of tricks. one of these is to make things which are miles away appear much larger and closer. (ships in the sky, upside down etc).

The ship was between rathlin Island and myself I could see rathlin on the radar. (Spookey or what) I just fitted two new volvo kad 32's which are slightly heavier than my old mercs. I am thinking that although the dome looks horiz. it bay be slightly elevated at the front when under power but is the height of the beam so fine ? Food for thought.
