Why is it that when we want to sail, our 12 yr old daughter pulls the biggest sulk this side of the atlantic, it's boring. uncool, no t.v etc, etc, etc, but mention a few days away on a tall ship at a substantial cost to mam and dad and it's the coolest thing this side of Antarctica, ah well, guess she'll have a great time, /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

I guess she has her eye on the Sea Cadets' brig Royalist?

I cannot think of any other sail training organisation that takes 12 year olds.
The Tall Ships Youth Trust ( http://www.tallships.org ) have a minimum age of 16.
Maybe try and convince her that it would be a lot more cool to go sailing with the TSYT when she is 16 - much bigger ship, lots more crew, go further afield etc - but she will need to gain suitable experience first (OK, she doesn't, but you can tell a porky?) by sailing with Mum and Dad.....
Or would she see through that straight away?

Sailing on tall ships is bloody hard work though - so maybe if she does go on a voyage she will realise that life is much easier sailing with Mum & Dad on their boat......

Sorry, not very helpful comments, but I cannot come up with anything better.

What's with all this about having to bribe her to come sailing and making it fun for her? /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
Why when I was her age we were shanghaied and once onboard were expected to be grateful for our passage! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Thats the trouble with kids these day etc, etc, etc etc etc etc etc and so on.....

Why? Because she's a 12yr old female - it comes with the territory. With ours we mix sailing with onshore activities at the ports we visit. It doesn't give me the amount of sailing that I would like but it's a reasonable compromise. Of course she complains beforehand but she enjoys it when we are out.

I think you have already guessed the reason and it has nothing to do with the boat, tv, etc...

...but everything to do with "being with the parents".

I think your doing the right thing, letting her follow what she obviously enjoys but maybe with a more "cool" crowd.

She'll be back, and as the panel has rightly pointed out it will be with some stud. Although he's more than likely going to turn up on a motorbike (No insurance or tax, its a government conspiracy) have longer hair than her and think that "the body cleans itself".

Good luck, and just think the kind of boat you would have now if it weren't for the getting married and having kids thing......

We just come through that....

It is just not cool to have fun with Parents.

The good thing though, it will get better in 6 or 7 years..

Can also be helped by here inviting a friend along. Cos then she feels like the Bees Knees.

Or, Maybe it's a Shipman28 thing. Cos ours were fine on our little Westerly 22. They started their C*^p after we purchased our Shipman. The good thing though is that they love our Bavaria. Now there is something to think about......

Hang in there
