I agree with Wiggo; it's a matter of adapting to the conditions and this is true anywhere, not just the UK.

In 8 years of boating (planing hull), based in the SW, I arrange trips weeks or even months in advance and I have only had to cancel 2 or 3. I have sometimes had to choose another destination but rarely had to cancel altogether.

The hull design can make an enormous difference as can length.

unfortunately not knowing your length, let alone your hull design or operating area it's difficult to put this in perspective.
as an example a 17th dory operating out of Poole Harbour could as equally make the same statement as 40ft'er based in Portsmouth - but all meaning different things in practice.
