don't need to do it every year but got the tin our of the garage and the top wouldn't come off - stuck fast. eventually had to drive a screwdriver between the lid and the tin and prise it off that way and then bang back on for transport. needless to say the top came off in the car but luckily it was wrapped in a bin liner (i have had so much experience of disasters i prepare in advance!)

only suggestion i can think of with the new tin is to wipe the lid and the top of the tin with white spirit before putting it back on. any other suggestions?

My new tin was the same, the way it was peened over made it so you were pulling on the tin rather then the lid, the lip between the two was very small.
My experience exactly! Very annoying, however happy to report that tin still seals (5yrs on) and still plenty of juice in it.
Unfortunate that it definitely Doesn't do what it says on the tin. Now demoted to interior woodwork treatment, hope it will manage 4-5 yrs in there...

Cheers

You can buy new empty paint tins on ebay. I keep a few 1/2L tins so when my expensive toplac/D2/whatever gets crusty round the rim, the lid gets mangled or just to stop too much air in the tin causing it to skin, I decant the old tin into the new though a paint filter.

I have to confess I've never costed it out...... but I hate throwing away paint.

Your thinking is correct.
