My boat is in Faro and I'm travelling out next month to start the summer hols, but I need to get a new cooker, and possibly a new liferaft. Any suggestions on the cheapest option, I'm thinking of shipping from the UK, or finding a supplier in Portugal who could ship, possibly hiring a car and going along the Algarve or into Spain and buying one, or making do until I find a chandlers on route, we are heading to Barcelona. Sadly we have to call into Gib as my partner wants to see the apes, I believe that used to be a cheap source of bits, but not sure if that is still true. Any suggestions much appreciated.

You will find transport firms who will take part loads from England to the Algarve on google, but you will have to have someone there to receive them.
I don't know of a chandlers that would have a cooker in stock, either on the Algarve or the Atlantic coast of Spain (a life raft is more likely). They will get you one from a catalogue if you can wait a few days, but this may be more expensive than ordering it yourself, and no quiicker.
I don't buy much chandlery from Gib., but we recently went shopping for a laptop, getting prices from Gib., Spain, and mail order, and that was the order of prices, Gib. dearest, mail order cheapest. Just because something is 'tax free' doesn't mean it is a bargain.
If I were you, I would take a catalogue or two with me when I went, and then ask the chandlers there for their prices for comparison. The one at Villamoura is the biggest. Then order it straight away, while you have a land address to send it to, if you go mail order, and something to do while you wait for it.

I suppose if you're going to winter in Barcelona, then you could consider driving there with tools and supplies next spring. This is one reason why I moved from Preveza Greece to Monfalcone Italy, taking the car really simplifies maintaining a boat in the Med, and gets round the airline's weight restrictions. I drove out with supplies in May, inc wood and epoxy and heavy tools. Tomorrow I return via Ryannair with only a 15kg bag!

Chandlers

Thanks for the responses, I can't wait till next year to get the cooker fixed, so it looks like the best bet is mail order, or pre ordering via a chandlers in the region. I have been to the one in Lagos, and have also heard of good things about it, I wonder if anyone has contact details for them.

I used a company called transport direct to deliver a number of items such as a generator. VHF aerial, and more. The service was excellent and prompt, the algarve base is in Albufera. The U.K. address is Direct Transport Services, Switch International freight terminal. Mylens Rd. Andover. hants. Ph. 1264353434.
I had equipment that i bought from UK supliers including Blue Water services in Jersey (whom I also found to be excellent) delivered to their warehouse then on to the Algarve. The Algarve No is 00351289591312. Hope this helps.

The small chandlers that used to exist along the back of the fishing sheds in Lagos has moved into the town (road behind the bus garage) but on a visit last month it hardly has anything boat related - mainly stocking fishing lures!

I think I recall seeing ovens on the floor same month in Sopromars Chandlery. They are rarely the best value around but you can always google, ask for any of the staff who speak English (most do) and pose the question.

Or you could buy here and ship down. Last time we needed to move a boat load from Lagos to the UK (it was 2004 but around 50% of a Transit van by volume) it only cost us £100 backloaded onto a furniture van returning to Salisbury. Got it all in seven days. Regret cannot recall transport firm name, but google international furniture removers and you should find them.

And final suggestion might be contact with the Marina da Lagos Navigators 'expat' Club. I am pretty sure they'd know if members were driving up / down from UK and maybe consider carrying limited size goods in exchange for a contribution to fuel costs.....worth a try?

Good luck

Pet Transport Service

Hi

We had a pet transport service carry our new life raft from UK to Lagos. Found number in Free paper in Lagos, some one on the forum may help with that.

I had my package delivered to there base in UK. They have a big transit van which I believe goes every week and is not always full of pets. Delivered on time and cheap.

Good luck

getting bulky items to Faro

If you can get a BA flight to Faro or nearby I took out last year a Honda generator weighing 24 kilos to Barcelona from Heathrow and was charged £28.00! BA is brilliant for extra weight/bulky items.

We were in Lagos for winter of 08/09 and shipped a load of stuff down (dinghy, outboard etc). Very cheap via Algarve removals - google them - and great service.

We looked at buying a new oven down in Lagos (and in the med since) but all daft prices. Probably get an oven half the price in the uk (a Plastimo one was half what we were offered in a couple of chandlers in Greece).

The chandler is Sopramar and it is the most expensive chandler I've ever had the misfortune to buy things from.

There are many Algarve removal firms that go to the UK and are looking to take loads back. If they have no load, no income, so they should be cheaper than a UK firm. A Google search will find them.

Try www.aim.com.pt

English Company based in Lagos. Removals and storage. I stored boat gear for one year and they are extremely helpful and co-operative.

I think they originate from the Manchester area so will be convenient for you.
