When it started off it was definitely a tri - but perhaps one of the bits has fallen off since?

Why isnt a catamaran, called a bi-maran as in tri-maran? Or would it not be prudent to say "he sails a bi" thinking of the sexual conotations?

I think catamaran is a Sri Lankan word and trimaran was back formed from it. (this presumes you wanted a serious answer!)
