I'm not quite ready for it yet, but bearing in mind the ageing baby boom generation, has any one given any thoughts about preparing their boats for use when we are less able?
Perhaps there will be a market for marine commodes or Stannah companionway hoists, or Musto beige cardigans.
When I was much younger, an older friend [we used to call them "uncles"] offered to give me his 27ft. Cutlass if I undertook to take him sailing a few times a year. I thought he was daft, but I can now see the point of such an arrangement.

I have heard that in germany there is currently some (serious) research underway on this topic, partly funded by the Hanse yard. This involves a yacht fitted with bow- and sternthrusters and electric selftailing and self-losing (sorry, don't know the word) winches.

invalid gag error

no, awol used the past perfect "i have had" clearly indicating that his period of ownership is complete and in the past, and hence that the self-losing winch handles performed correctly.

Hope this helps.

It occurs to me that there are at least couple of advantages in carrying on sailing in your geriatric years.

Firstly an automatic bilge pump would mean a commode was unnecessary....... and secondly, with the end so near, there is not much point in all that expensive emergency life saving gear is there?

Just a thought /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

and while you are at it, you can save on the funeral/cremation costs.... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

When I informed my daughter that, when the time came, I was having a Viking funeral, she replied quite firmly with " not on my inheritance your not"

I know a couple of sailors who are well into their 80s and keep going regardless. I hope to follow their example in about 40 years' time

that is OK, if they are willing to come along and tip me overboard when I am "topped", they are welcome to their inheritance (if they have learnt how to sail it back) /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

You see, there's another marketing opportunity.

Musto high waist offshore incontinence trousers.

Extra large capacity.

Can you order them in beige??

large Print Almamacs would be good.Im allready looking down the binos the wrong way to read tidetables /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Could have something like the MOB trackers in reverse; skipper has a heart monitor fitted and when it senses that heart has stopped it ejects skipper overboard and contacts SeaStart or similar to collect boat. Could also auto-inform next of kin of their windfall - and save the cost of burial. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Could see a few problems if it was Microsoft based due to bugs etc, Solent would be completely blocked with swimming boaters.
