I was thinking of visiting this establishment over the weekend. Is it ok to anchor on Quay reach on the Roach & walk from there? I will phone the pub to confirm, but was wondering what the landing was like - presumably at low water it's the usual Essex mud - lash on your boots & hope for the best!

It's quite OK these days. It's a fairly well trodden route. You aren't supposed to stray off the road and you may get spoken to by MOD plod as a check but that's less likely nowadays.
The Old Gaffers often have a rally there over the bank holiday so you may have to put up with squeeze box music & shantys.

Well worth the effort! Yes, plenty of Essex mud at low tide so you will need boots. There are bits of rock and concrete scattered in the mud so watch your bottom if using an inflatable. The steps in the sea wall get very slippery so take care. You can leve your muddy boots under the wooden bench at the top of the steps (assuming you remembered to take walking shoes with you for the half mile walk). There is a sign board on the sea-wall with the pub's phone number on it. Keep to the road/path and aim for the church spire. the pub is just beyond the church. No dogs are allowed on the island and you are not allowed to take binoculars. You can only get food at the pub at certain times so do check. Also, you need an anchor that works in very soft mud and make sure you dig it in well before you leave the boat unattended. Enjoy!
