Just about to change the oil in the Genset, water cooled, single cylinder Faryman engine in a casing, in the engine bay. Manual says to use SAE 40 oil, I already have plenty of 15/40 mineral oil is it ok to use this?

This is from the manual,
Diesel engine Series 15W / 18W

3.13 Engine oil specification
The engine oil quality has a significant influence on the lifetime,
performance and thus also the cost-effectiveness of the engine.
The ambient temperature at the in
stallation location or application
of the engine is crucial for the se
lection of the correct viscosity
class.
Too high viscosity can result in starting difficulties; too low viscosity
can endanger the lubrication effect and result in high lubrication oil
consumption. The viscosity is classified according to SAE.
Basically, use mulltigrade oils.
Depending on the lubrication oil temperature, we recommend the
following common viscosity classes.

Then there is a chart of what grade to use depending on ambient. 15w/40 is shown as ok for -15c to 35c.

For my genset I use a mineral 15w40 spec CF same as main engine

I would expect 15W/40 will be just fine, these are simple engines, widely used on construction machinery, where I expect they get all sorts used. I use SAE30 in mine - lawnmower oil (4 stroke). Only holds about a pint.
