What size winches would the panel reckon for a 26 footer, with around 250 sq.ft of genoa?

I was thinking of size 16 self tailers, based on our experience with the the existing Lewmar No.10s which I reckon must have a "power ratio" of around 7.

Does that sound about right? I'm just really looking for sanity check before I make the change over the winter.

We have recently changed to ST winches on our Seamaster 29 with about 290 sq ft genny. The Antal 2 speed 30s are only marginally big enough for the job. Interesting, the original Barlow 25s were more powerful.

I had Anderson 40's selftailers on a Jaguar 27 which was a bit over the top but made it very easy. I then transferred them to my Moddy 33 and they are only just big enough. My recommendation (if you can afford it)would be to go fo the next larger size than recommended for your size of boat.

Cheers.

The Lewmar web site give a recommendation for 25-29' boat, masthead rig .. 16 is their "Standard" and 30 their "Maximum Recommendation".

Harken's recommendation is based on "I" "J" etc, and comes out in favour of 32s.

Sounds like 16s might be a bit light.
