Whilst furling the genny inbound last Monday I noticed there was a horizontal tear about 1/2 way up the leach right across the U/V strip material; the actual sail beneath appears from deck level to be O.K.. Can I get away with a bit of nifty stitching by hand, or does the team think a sturdier machine stitching by sail repairer is in order?

If it is jjust the UV strip, the a bit of sticky spinnacker repair tape should be good enouh til the end of the season. It is the UV strip's way of telling you it needs to be replaced.

Blown genny - having as Talbot advises - Spinnaker repair tape applied to UV strip .... the sail is being stitched with palm and needle ...

It is surprising how good that tape is ... sail lasted till end of season and hadn't failed at all.

If UV strip is splitting - then either you have a jaggy edge on spreader or it's just getting past its life ... easy job for sail-maker to replace..... till then use the tape ! For peace of mind - a single catching stitch at ends of tape ?

Re: Genoa tear..... tape

You can even get it in colours !! Mine - I use the semi clear stuff ... but you should be able to get blue near to the UV colour ...
