Hi,

I've been quoted on a new Genoa using 7.4oz (US) Dacron for a 130% Genoa. This is the same weight of cloth as quoted for the main. Initially I was quoted 4.4oz cloth but this was changed after I reduced the percentage (150 to 130) and taking into account the winds (15-25kts regular in summer) and that I intend to take her into the big blue (Indian Ocean) in a couple of years.

Any advice on how to establish the suitability of a given cloth weight or does one simply trust the sailmaker (I have no reason to doubt their ability). Its a roller reefed genoa.

Regards
TonyM

Ask your sailmaker about Pentex cruising laminate. It will keep its shape long after Dacron has turned into a sack. Only marginally more expensive too.

Had a main and jib made for my last boat out of the stuff, 18,000 miles later and two Atlantic crossings still a perfect shape.

Quotes I had in Turkey were for 120% & 130% sizes from two different companies. Both suggested 9oz Dacron. This is for a 45 footer. In the event I have chosen to have the sail made as a 130% tri radial, in cruising laminate, in the belief that this will hold its shape better. As for sailcloth weights I am not sure how much they are dependant on the sail size, i.e. will a bigger boat need heavier cloth?
