Genoa car’ alternative. Where did I see it??

I recently saw an article somewhere which, using a couple of lines and ‘friction rings’, creates a poor mans [ie, PBO forum) alternative to Genoa cars / upgrade to a toerail fixed Genoa sheet block..... but I can’t for the life of me find it now.
Can anyone help me in the right direction please? Thanks.

Or to explain again you have a block mounted well aft on the side deck ie the best position for the biggest jib. You use this for all jib sizes but the sheet passes through a ss ring or a block on the end of a line which comes down to the deck well forward ie about the position for the smallest jib then forward a bit more. This last line when hauled in onto a cleat will pull the sheet down exactly as a forward position jib car will. So just pull it down until the jib sets well when hard on the wind.
That is the tension on the leach is correct in relation to that on the foot. Or the top of the jib luffs at the same time as the bottom.
Now all this presupposes that the sheeting angle ie angle of the jib foot to the centre line of the boat is correct. Tighter angle might give better pointing while wider angle gives more power for less heeling in a blow. So you can take another line with deck block attached to the gunwhale to pull the jib sheet outwards. Relying on a deck block for the first barber hauler to be well in board. This latter ability to sheet as wide as possible can be really good for running working to some extent like a whisker pole.
Some years back I saw the big 100ft racers in Hobart had a system of a sideways track for the barber hauler deck pulley the barber hauler having just a ring on the end that the jib sheet went through. They must think it a good idea. olewill

Also known as floating genoa leads, or 3d sheeting, for further searches. Some material on Sailing Anarchy worth a read on the subject, positive and negative.

For inspiration check out Pogo who have implemented this very cleanly on production boats.
 
Djangos have them too, but be careful, if the sail flogs at all then you have a s-steel ring whipping about, even on my little 670 a short sharp flick of the sheet was enough force to make a mess of my 8 or 10mm thick (not certain) acrylic side window! Soft shackle & well padded rings are needed I think. But otherwise it is a very neat, simple and light alternative to track etc

Soft shackle is a must. Or else, as I do, tail-splice the dyneema end around or through the soft shackle (depending on the mechanical advantage you design into the pulley) and you won't need one.

You can avoid the flogging problem by hauling the thing down to the deck before you furl the genoa in. It cost me a few dings in the coachroof gel coat to learn that. I still intend to sew a leather jacket around the each side deck's low-friction ring (your 'padded rings' solution), but it's a bit of work and one of those jobs that keeps bobbing back down the priority list!
