Hi All !
Looking for a generator to go on my colvic 35 there is a large area below deck at the stern of the boat. Travelled 300 miles the other day to buy a silent running diesel almost new but even though it is silent sounded like a tractor. Cant afford 3500 pounds for a marine one to be fitted does anyone know of any good petol or diesel silent running generators non water cooled.
Thanks
Dave

You are looking for two different things. My Diesel Genny cost £250 from mackro. But I have spent more than that on fiting and some insulation. I am looking at improving the sound insulation and it is not going to be cheap.

Diesels are noisy. Unless you are willing to spend thousands on a customised silenced unit then your best route is to get a DG that fits in the space then sound proof yoursef.

Thats what i was going to do sound proof it.
But the problem is the they are air cooled, how did you get around boxing it in and allowing enough air so it did not over heat.

How about this

So is mine air cooled. When I first fitted it, it was very noisy. But after after a local exhaust firm let me in with a tape measure I found that a Robin Reliant silencencer box (£13.99) fitted the hose. This made a distinct improvement. Air inlet on end and controls on front but covered in back and top with lagging on a ally plate. Concerened about heat I bought a 12 volt fan and fitted this to blow across the Genny, wired in to the Gennys 12 volt outlet, so that the fan runs whenever genny runs.
Noise is currently not overly obtrusive and we can watch televison comfortably with the genny running, but I want to improve the compartment sound insulation next.
