Having received much helpful advice [thank you D B] the engine now operates. Unfortunately, the voltage has dropped dramatically - down to 133v. Two questions: can anyone advise of a book which might help me to gain an understanding of this topic or suggest an expert I could consult?

Is the engine running at the correct revolutions? Even a small drop in the RPM makes a dramatic difference in the voltage output, also the Herz. I had a similar problem, solved by adjusting the governer stop.

Afraid not

Thank you for your reply CCS. Unfortunately it dropped whilst running without any audible change in engine revs - I'm looking for a rev counter - so my ill-informed guess would be that the problem is electrical [diode?] not engine.
