Hi All,

As part of an interior tidy-up / minor refit I wish to do some painting of the interior.

can anybody recommend a suitable general purpose paint which can be used an various substrates such as wood, plastic, fibreglass etc. I am pretty much hoping to use one type of , tough, durable paint to touch-up everything.

Many thanks.

I use Johnstone's Eggshell Trade Paint. It is solvent-based, is sold as being good for bathrooms and seems to cope with the interior of my boat, including the previously painted aluminium mast where is passes through the cabin. It comes in stock shades or can be made up in any colour.

The best primer is Zizzner 123 which is Shellac and will go straight on any surface. It’s expensive and extremely fast drying. Any decent paint over that. I’d use a water based eggshell in satin.

I'm leaning towards something like Toplac (or Perfection Pro for a 2-component option) to tackle some areas where our interior GRP moldings need re-finishing.

But I've yet to read much info on the method (or indeed the results) from those who have tried it...

The advice to those looking to replicate a factory gelcoat finish is often either not to bother (the Zinnser route - with no offence inteded!) or use gelcoat (but that's a bit of a pain to achieve the right conditions on board, tint it, sand/polish etc.).

A Jotun option would be my preference (based on great experience with their paints so far), but I've never used their 'top coats' and - again - yet to read anything on other's experiences on here.

I would go with that. If it is multisurface then the primer is important.

I've used Danboline on the interior, e.g. bulkheads in the heads, inside lockers etc. Seems to do a good job of covering up whatever was underneath, so works well when changing colour.

In a misguided fit of environmentalism we used a water based (latex) paint on our boat interior; this was a bad mistake. Mold simply loves the stuff and the stains are impossible to remove. What ever you do, avoid Satan, or was that satin (?), go for semi gloss at the very least and pick a solvent based type. The more poisonous the better as far as I am concerned; ventilate well while applying and during the drying process.
