I will be putting Shady back in the water now all the odd jobs are done, but I have had to repair the gelcoat in one or two places and I have rubed down with a very fine wet & dry to get the gelcoat smooth. I have applied two or three coats of polish but can still see where I had rubed down the gelcoat.

Any sugestions to get the polish back? I dont want to paint the area's

Also what is THE best fibreglass polish to keep the shine for a season?

I've just finished doing mine today. Farecla G3 Rubbing Compound followed by 3M Marine Polish. I used the Polish last year & it was fabulous. After the cutting back today & then the polish the finish is truly amazing.

Can be got at www.screwfixdirect.com

Screwfix state "Revitalise your car, boat or caravan with these pastes and liquids. G3 400g Paste - Fast cutting action, removes blemishes and polishes in one action. For use on GRP. G3 Liquid 1Ltr - Hi-tech liquid for cutting 2-pack paint systems. Removes all marks and blemishes. G10 500ml Liquid - Fine cutting action, gives a supreme finish. Use with a finishing sponge or sheepskin bonnet. Top Glaze 500ml - Use to finish off paintwork giving a high gloss finish."

There you go. I've always found them fast and efficient...

I got my G3 from the local car paint & finishing suppliers but I know that Screwfix sell it too. The 3M wax I buy from my local chandlers or boatyard. I used an electric polisher & buffer to finish mine but I'm not sure it is really worth it on a boat as small as mine.

I bought something called Farecla Hull Cleaner in a chandlery sale last autumn. Haven't used it yet. Usage instructions sound like G10, and bottle looks like G10 pic in Screwfix catalog as well altho obviously different labels. Anyone happen to know if it's the same thing?

I also would highly recommend the 3M glassfibre polish once you have used rubbing compound on your repairs. It really does keep a gloss finish for a whole season and more.

As far as I can gather, they all work in a simialr principle - there is a mild abrasive material within the cream that removes 'oxidation' in the gel coat. You can also use 'T-cut' or if you have a coloured hull a similarly tinted 'Color Restorer' both found in automotive suppliers. As they say "...test on a small area first..." . some of the products can be quite severe. The key is a good polish after cleaning to delay the 'oxidation' process as long as possible

If you read the Farecla info they seem to say that Gel Coat requires a coarser compound than a paint finish. I presume this is why they recommend G3 for GRP.
