I have noticed some crazing on the hull of my Fulmar (1990) well above the waterline. Is this a sign of trouble? The boat is in the water for approx six months per year. I suspect it may have been caused by minor impact damage by the previous owner as I have had the boat 8 months following an ok survey.
thanks john muir

The crazing could be caused by impact to the outside of the hull (another boat/pontoon) or by localised stress from the inside of the boat (stringer/frame/bulkhead or shelf). Look inside the yacht, to see what could be causing the trouble. If a bulkhead or stringer has become un-bonded this will cause stress and crazing will result. To remedy, re-glass any point inside that has become loose, gring back the crazed gel coat and re gel the area (wait until it warms up a bit).

There's normally a good reason for crazing, try and find out what caused yours. If it was another boat there's no problem but if it is a structural part of the boat that has become un-stuck, ask yourself WHY? What new pressure are being exerted or was the job just not done well enough in the first place?

Impact is the most likely cause. Had a small bump from my neighbour. Couldn't see anything but after a few days once dirt settled in the cracks I saw the fine black siderweb like lines....

Have you decided to repair it or leave it JFCAL. My thoughts are to leave alone if above the water line and the boat is out of the warter have of the year.
