Any help would be much appreciated.

I have a nic 32 with a coloured gel coat. It is very faded and dull. I am pulling her out at the weekend to antifal etc and was going to try and restore the original colour to her topsides.

Does any one know of the products that I should be using and what the best way is to apply them? I was thinking of hiring an industrial polisher.

Thanks

Contact Farecla in Ware on 01920 465041 (They seem to be between websites at the moment) and ask for details of their range of products and local stockists.

Essentially you need a suitable fibre glass rubbing compound and a foam compounding mop which you keep wet (a supply of water in a Fairy liquid bottle is the trick) I used a two speed electric drill on slow speed on a small boat but with a larger job I would recommend a polishing machine. If it's bad you may want to do the worst bits with a heavy duty compound first. It's not a five minute job but if you are prepared to put the effort in you will not be disappointed and once you've done it it's relatively easy to maintain by repeating evey few years.

I restored a dull pink gel coat to a good glossy red, so good in fact that at least one person in the yard thought I had painted it.

Fully endorse previous message re Farecla. I use a cleaning spray bottle (Mr Muscle sort of thing) to spray moisture on the hull and found it even better than squirting jets of water from a squeezy bottle. Be warned, an industrial polishing machine gets damned heavy by the time you reach the end of one side of the hull, but people will stop and stare in amazement at the results!

Good luck

Take a look at PBO October issue, page 69. There is a good description of the kit that you need and where to buy it. The Rupes polishing machine weighs just 1.8Kg but it costs around £300 .............. but worth it if you want to do a good job; and of course you can use to put the shine back next year, and the year after and ....
