gel coat or paint

looking to coat the out side of my 20 foot gpr hull.any one like to to offer advise on etch primer and paint or spray on gel coat.
thinking on the gel coat lines but have been told repaint is as good. would like to hear your thoughts.thanks garry.
 
Is paint or new gel needed? If its in bad shape most surfaces can be bought back to life. Got any pics or morw info?
 
How much is your boat worth? If it is not a lot then rub it down, fill in the scratches, prime/ undercoat, rub down until it is smooth then paint it. I used Toplac and a gloss roller from Wickes and got a good finish and some compliments from the guys at the sailing club.
If I was doing it again I would have a go with two pot paint as it is harder. The first time I went out to the boat in the tender it was a bit bouncy and it marked the paint.
Don't forget that preparation is the key and that is where your time and effort will be spent. It all depends how good you want the final result to be.

Paint is fine, but from my experience suffers from oxidation so much quicker than gel coat. My boat has had a full wet sand and needs the softest of foam pads once a year to apply a glaze, precious owner had a strip painted and no matter what I do it never lasts or looks the same.
 
the boat is worth about 2500, i spray a bit with french polish and lacquers. but do not have a clue with grp. will do a search on here thanks for taking the time to relpy guys. garry

Totally wrong I'm afraid. (Dulux maybe!) But two-pack will more or less never oxidise like gel coat does.
 
The metal trim on my boat and stripe on the gel must be done with dulux then. Must be the same for post office vans too.
