Gel Coat, my options

Hi

Does anybody know if gel coat can be brushed on as well as sprayed, is it self levelling, as its a thinner version of the epoxy used in making GRP? Would it be easier to use coloured gel coat or gel coat then 2 pack paint on top- its an area above the waterline, its just that trying to find coloured gel coat seems a thankless task and might be easier to paint afterwards rather than mixing and matching a colour into it.

kev, if this is visible i wd serious get an expert to do it - i had a bit done on the radr arch and the guy came back with various treatments and sanding and rubbing about six times over the following two days. They can and should match the colour invisibly...

Hi Kevin,

I have done loads of gel repairs over the years. Its not as easy as some people think, its quite hard to get it perfect. There are pigments about that you mix with the standard white gel, to get the desired colour but its trial and error! When set you need to spend lots of time and care to rub down with wet and dry of different grades to get it looking good.

Large chips or holes are much easier to do than trying to touch up a long scratch! If its above waterline and you don't feel you have the skills then get a professional to do it for you, it will pay in the long run when you come to sell the vessel!

Thanks for responses and to the link to the other thread, perhaps it may be a job best done by somebody who knows what they are doing I like trying to do new things but not if im going to cock it up and devalue anything

Saw an old Westerly Centaur, holed by the leg of a mobo last winter, re-gellcoated at Weir Quay, Plymouth. The hull looked like a new one.

I think they paint it on, about 6 coats, and then use lots of wet'n'dry and cutting compound.
