Gel Coat Concerns....

I have narrowed my next puchase to either a Sealine S34 or a Jeanneau Prestige 34 (Hardtop). I spoke to a local valeter at the weekend and he raised some concerns about the quality and durabilty of the Jeanneau Gel Coat. Are there owners out there that have experienced problems with theirs or is it a known fact that the Jeanneau Gel Coat is not as well laid up as some of the other major brands? Thanks in advance.

Our Prestige 36 is nearly 5 years old, no problem with construction of any kind, gel coat looks as good as new.

Contractors who have worked on her, bow thruster and tabs have commented on the high quality of the construction.

unless I am mistaken, "lay-up" usually refers to the fibreglass, on top of which sits the protective gelcoat.
Gel is brittle, so if there is some weakness or flexing in the fibreglass (or if you bash the boat), the gel often cracks. The only other aspect I can think of, is if the gel itself was unusually thin, and so successive aggressive polishing might wear through it faster. That might be in a localised spot, but I m havent heard its a Jeanneau problem.

on mainstream sail boats i.e Beneteau, Bavaria and Jeanneau it is usually the best of the crop
I also viewed a 2005 model this year, and it was close to perfect
gel tickness is the same to Sealine in most areas

Both excellent boats so the choice for me would depend on cruising area.
for UK the hardtop Jeanneau
for the Med the Sports S34

did you mention trim tabs on the 36??. I didnt know you could fit them on one???

Yes...My main concern is that the Gel Coat is not applied as as thickly (thus more durable) as it is on some other premier brands.
