I installed a new ZF 10M gearbox on my Nanni 27hp engine and have had nothing but grief from it over the past 18 months. The engine alignment is spot on, the gear selector moves the specified 35 mm when forward is engaged but after few hours the clutch appears to slip when revs are increased, backing off the revs a little allows full engagement and then things are alright when it has warmed up. Over time this slipping gradually gets worse untill there is basically no forward propulsion when power is increased ie the clutch plates no longer engage.
Has anybody else experienced this problem with a ZF gearbox?

Sorry I cant answer your question directly but only yesterday I had to deliver a small commercial vessel to a well known gearbox company in North Kent for gearbox repairs (Twin Disc). They know all this stuff inside out as i drove back to essex with one of their managers.

They were absolutely brilliant and am sure they could diagnose your problems. I dont wish to advertise here but will give you their name if you PM me.

When I had those symptoms it was low fluid level. It turned out that the fluid level should be measured with the dipstick not screwed in. Also the angle of the gearbox has some effect on fluid level measurement.
On relatively short runs it behaved fine, then on longer runs the situation you describe would occur.
Perhaps too simple a solution in your case, but in my case a lot of so-called experts offered sage, but ineffective, advice until a diesel mechanic suggested I checked this fluid level issue. Problem solved.

hi, i would check the oil level as sugested, but i would also change the oil. if the box has been slipping then the oil will be contaminated. these gear boxes do not like to run hot or they slip and burn the clutch plates and oil.

Problem solved Re ZF10M

After doing 130 hours and replacing the gearbox again with my Hurth HBW100 reconditioned which also did another 130 hours or so in frustration changed whole engine, propshaft and prop. Hey presto success smoth running.
The problem all along was a bent propshaft.
The new engine is a Nanni 3.30 model with TMC40 gearbox.
