What are the pros and cons of mechanical / hydraulic gear boxes?
At the moment I have the possibility of using either a Hurth mechanical box (with some sort of cooler built in) or a Borg Warner Hydraulic. Both are coming of similar size Perkins, neither have any noticable play in the shafts. Both are rated at about twice the power of my new motor. Will I suffer a large loss of power by using such a large box?
One thing I don´t like about the Hurth is that it uses the same small bolt to hold the drive plate on that my ZF uses, and that has broken with expensive consequences to shaft and plate, not once but twice, the last time on the second or third time I engaged reverse. It seems impossible to me that a 10mm bolt can take the axial load of a 50 Hp motor. Yes I have got a soft connection.
