Hi, my Borg Warner manual states I should use the following gear box oil:

"Type 3 SAE #30 or #40

1st choice SAE-API Service class CD or
2nd choice SAE-API Service class CC"

So.....
Is the 1st and 2nd choice better than SAE #30/40 ?
Or
is SAE-API Service Class CD/CC the same as SAE #30/40?
Or
is CD and CC a class of SAE #30/40 ?

A quick google suggests SAE #30 or #40 is the same as 10w30/10w40 however the manual states that "multi viscosicty oils such as 10w40 are not acceptable."

It then says less than 3000 RMP #30 is preferred, but 40 for high operating temperatures.

It even gives the military equivalent spec, but no indication of which should be used for less than 3000 rpm or high temperatures....so lots of points awarded for obscurity of information but none for clarity.

Does anyone have a simple way through this ?

Thanks
Mark

cc/cd is the test standard, cd being higher. Multigrades have friction modifiers so are unsuitable for gearboxes generally. Mono grades are usually the best bet. Either cc or cd etc, not a lot to choose on that score.

oil gearbox

we have velvet drive 72c's direct drive 1/1, if over 2000 rpm use atf, if under 2000 use engine oil. Mind ours are over 20 years old. The engines are 180's, ford sabres. I assume you have gearbox oil coolers fitted. When talking engine oil they were in those days talking series three turbo oil.

If your gearbox is old (worn) it will run better on 30wt providing that you dont exceed 3000 revs.

It is approved by the manufacturer of the box so dont worry. As already stated DONT use a multi-grade.

If you would like a PDF of the gearbox PM me with your email address and I will send one on to you.

I use red ATF in my velvet drives, always have, they are about 17 years old. Mermaids, 135. max revs 2600, but mine wont rev over 2000, biiiiig props and 4:1 boxes.
