Took a bit to notice but full up with a cold eventually worked out that the smell in the wheelhouse was gas. Only when swmbo was using the cooker. Now should i tighten all connections or get a gas man to check it?
Ouch........ Ok no 1 TURN OFF THE GAS at the bottle.
If you have a leak in the system its very serious. yes if you are confident do it yourself, but if in doubt get in a professional. You will probably have an obligation under your insurance to see that the system is fit for use & may even require certifying.
Personally I replace ALL the gas services in any boat I have purchased, complete with new regulators etc.
I sounds like you have either a leaky tap, a loose connection on the flexible hose or a burner problem on the cooker. These are simple bits of kit and well within the competence of most "amateur" marine engineers, but that said, it's really not worth taking the risk if you've any doubts so I'd always reccommend a gas fitter....what's more you'll get a certificate when he's done which will make the Insurance company happy.
Hoses are datestamped so there's no way you can replace them under an existing certificate anyway.
You might find a hand held gas detector useful, not expensive from Maplin but to finally pinpoint the trouble use a leakdetector spray. We are always told not to use washing up liquid in water because it is said to be corrosive but in an emergency would I use that. Find the leak dont just go round tightening all the connections. You might create leaks by overtightening them
If it is only noticeable when the cooker is actually in use as opposed to when the gas is turned on then it's a leak on the cooker itself but if you can make a makeshift manometer from a length of small diameter plastic tube it might be worth doing a leak test on the system (unless you already have a bubble tester fitted)
If your wheelhouse is higher than the cooker, you might be smelling the products of combustion rather than gas - especially if the cooker burner is running a bit "rich". Is the flame nice and blue or has it got yellow in it? Make sure the air intake on the burner near the tap is clear.
How full is the bottle? When it is nearly empty the smell that is put in so that you can smell it in the first place becomes very strong.
You can smell it as the gas burns off. It dissapears when you connect a new bottle.
With respect, if you have to ask us whether or not to get the system checked, have it checked. I would not have gas on my boat without a PROPER detector, not a lidle cheapy, I value my and the families security too much. Bill
STOP STOP STOP
Unless to have 100% confidence in what you are doing then get a CORGI gas engineer in to carry out a soundness test on your system & to check the appliances. Most now carry gas analysers which can tell immediatley if a burner is not working correctly. May cost a few bob but better safe than sorry my friend. You only get one chance with gas.
JackmeTickler....................CORGI Reg Gas Engineer.
Having had my parents almost killed in a gas explosion and now working as a fire investigator in shipping, get it professionally checked NOW. Really, it is not worth running the risk.
I have parafin on my boat, and found that the flexible fuel line failed on the weekend (about 10 years old). The result? I get parafin running out under the stove and I turn it off. With gas, the problem can be much more dangerous.
