In the interests of safety we are all urged to switch of gas at the bottle or gas compartment after use - and I guess this seldom happens.

I'm sure there must be a 12v operated valve that could be installed in the gas compartment with a switch in the cabin that could isolate the gas supply very easily.

Has anyone any suggestions?

Yes - there is a readily available solenoid solution which you can operate from the galley and will turn off the gas bottle at the regulator. I'm sure Calor Gas in Southampton can supply.

Good idea! You can buy valves for some gas alarms that can operate automatically in the event of detection - maybe one of these could be modified?

I already have a solenoid type fitted. Next time I'm at the boat I'll check. It really is the bees knees - no more having to get dressed on cold mornings before the first cup of tea!

Suggest you fit one of the bubler leak test thingys too - bit more cost , but at least you will know whether there is a leak some where or not.

Don't use the Irish leak test methid with a lighted match!!!!!!!

extra tip..

i have one of these. it draws 1/2 amp and always got left on until i added an led warning light to the switch. also make sure the switch is reachable from the galley- our first attempt meant climbing up the steps to the master panel then back down to the galley before brewing up. also make sure you can turn the solenoid off without having to reach across the cooker in case of disaster!

Technisol Ltd, based in Coventry manufacture a range of gas monitoring systems and solenoid valves. I have installed their dual gas alarm in my previous boat and they are entremely reliable and efficient. Their solenoid valves are designed to be used in conjunction with the gas alarms, but I presume could also be used independently.
They have a website: www.technisolltd.co.uk

Yes, you can use solenoid independently...

The Pilot range by Technisol is good. I fitted their solenoid valve on a previous boat, as a stand-alone item. Just needed a call to the Technisol helpline to get details of how to connect it (instructions don't cover this).

Gas conversions for cars are required to fit a shut off sol valve next to the fuel tank which is controlled by the ignition switch......i priced a 12v unit which would cost about 25 squids....has anyone ever fitted one on board....anyone see any potential problems???
