Got Camping Gaz (butane) with the boat and think it must be with a 28Mb regulator. Camping Gaz is not generally available in NI - I could drive south into ROI. However, what does the panel think about simply connecting up to Calor Gas (blue bottles and also butane - although I get the impression they are at 37Mb)?

Been trawling through old threads and cannot find a definitive answer - some seem to think it's OK but only in an emergency. Should I carry two regulators to switch between the two? and then what about having to carry loads of cylinders?

Advice, as always, extremely welcome and received with gratitude.

28mb regulaors are for butane.
37 mb regulators are for propane.

It is perfectly normal to swap between Camping gas and calor butane. You will need the adapter/shut off valve to fit the C.G cylinder and a calor type fitting on the hose to the regulator. Then you can connect directly to a calor cylinder or to the above adapter on the C.G cylinder.

If you have a regulator that attaches directly to the C.G. cylinder then you will have to ditch that and replace it with a bulkhead mounted regulator because AFAIK there is no adapter that enables you to fit a C.G. regulator to a Calor cylinder.

You will find all you need to know here http://www.calormarineshop.co.uk/ It takes a while to find what you want but it is all there. Go to the Marine shop then to boat fittings. You'll also find all you need to know about the installation else wher on the site.

edit: I should have added that the 28mb & 37 mb are the pressures AFTER the regulators not the pressure in the cylinder. You appeared confused about that.

Butane 28mb, propane 37mb: not interchangeable (don't even think about it /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif). You will find that your Camping Gaz pressure reducer will not fit onto a Calor (butane)gas bottle so you'll need the appropriate one. BUT Calor gas bottles are bigger than CG (so last longer: but can you stow one/them /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif) and gas is cheaper than CG's inflated price /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif. Camping Gaz is always Butane: this gas is liquid in its bottle at a much lower pressure (1.5 bars at 15°C) than propane (7.5 bars - 105psi). Propane is really only of interest on boats in the frozen north (where butane won't vapourise but propane will).

Try www.bes.co.uk

Click on LPG & Oil tab then Regulators.

I have just fitted a bulkhead-mounted regulator from them which is suitable for both Butane and Propane and also has a built in pressure relief valve(only suitable if you have a sealed gas locker which vents overboard). Part no.16543

You will also need the appropriate bottle connector and a flexible hose all listed on the same page.

Hope this helps,
Paul.

[/ QUOTE ] Wow Their prices are a tiny fraction of Calor prices. Can they be so cheap and still OK.

Yes, these are normal gas industry supply prices not swindlery/leisure market prices /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Yes Vic I went to see them in Birmingham when I was in the UK last september.

As someone else said more industral so prices reflect

They also do very good site glass with auto shut off valve that comply with UK regs, all specs and BS standards quoted in catalogue. It a good reference for all fluid fittings. Gas, Air, Oil and water
