I am in the process of preparing my boat for a survey the last being done 8 years ago by previous owner. When checking gas hose found was stamped 1999 I assume this is the date of installation and so is well past usable date. What regulations does the boat have to follow it a 1973 Westerly Longbow. The gas locker is of a side opening type in port cockpit locker with bottom drain over board. The bottles are shackled down with a regulator on the bottle attached to a 2 foot black hose to copper pipe exiting through the floor of gas locker to the snap fitting below the cooker then black flexi to cooker. The cooker is original Flavel and has no flame out shut off as far as I can see. Is this set up ok or do I need armoured hose to cooker an isolation tap fixed regulator top loading gas locker etc.

Hi unless you want a boat safety certificate to keep boat on British Waterways property the only rules that apply are those of common sense.
Worth while looking at Boat Safety certificate guidlines as they do reflect this common sense.
Different matter if its a new boat to which a whole variety of regulations apply.
For what its worth I have never had a surveyor pass any comment on gas installations other than they appear in working order.

There are no regulations - only standards and good practice. The locker sounds OK. You will certainly need to replace the hoses - no need for armoured type unless you have a potential chafe problem. If I were you, though, I would do what I have just done with a 10 year old boat - replace the lot. I had it done professionally for just over £300 including new regulator, tap and piping plus hooking up the (new) cooker and test certificate. The only thing I did was to remove trim to allow a seamless run of pipe.

You can get lots of advice and all the bits from Southern Calor in Southampton, and a list of installers/testers.

Thanks for the quick reply that’s pretty much what I thought but the more I read on the net the more confusing it gets. Good point about the surveyor’s comments as I couldn’t find anything mentioned on the previous surveys regarding gas installation. Just needed confirmation as if I am doing the job may as well do it right.
