what's your opinion on the wall mounted type of gas heaters? i need to to fit some type of hot water heating do they work ok ? will they provide enough hot water for a shower nad are they safe enough? there seems to have been one fitted before and was removed with no replacement .

If you are in a boat that doesnt lean over, and have a proper flue, then they do work. However, while I belive you are allowed to replace an existing heater, there are restrictions about fitting a new system - see the calor site, possibly has appropriate details.

I think they are excellent. We had a sailing boat with one, it worked perfectly and was never a moment's concern. Its flue exited into the boat but I saw no difference between its situation and boiling a kettle on the stove, so far as exhaust gases were concerned.

The next owner had an insurance survey done and the examiner nearly had an apopletic fit. The owner was forced to remove the heater on safety grounds.

The problem is that fitting a flue that complies with the regulations seems to be almost impossible. If you can overcome this then I would certainly go ahead and fit one.

I had 2 Rinnai's fitted to my boat, one for galley hot water and the other for the toilet sink. We never had a shower fitted although the manufacturer says they are good for this. Both exhausted into the boat. What with these, a 3 way fridge and a 4 ring gas hob, the Boat Safety Scheme bods were not too happy, but passed the boat ok in 2004. I must admit though I was never happy with a gas system with over 30 joints in it but never had a leak! Have now removed both gas heaters and fridge so BSS much happy and boat passed ok in Feb. I am happy too now that there are only 4 joints!

I've got a Paloma, heats the water on demand for the galley sinks, shower and sink in the heads which is 12 feet away, all with no problems.

I reckon the one I had on my Prout was brill. Unlike engine calorifiers, I could have hot water dried out and instantly. Ample for a shower. Economical on the gas.

I dont have hot water in the current boat and am thinking of fitting a gas heater rather than using a calorifier. Much better.
