Gas/grill query

The grill on my elderly gas cooker flares when I light it and will go out. The gas get cut off ok. I try it again and turn the gas down a little and then eventually it is ok and can be put back to full - the toast can be cooked ! The cooker and 2 x burners function just fine. Is there anything I can clean up on the grill ? I can't locate a jet anywhere although I guess there must be one. The actual grill burner tube looks hardly used.

If it is old, the holes along each side where the flames come out get blocked by rust.
If you can take it off, clean up the holes with a small (1mm) drill bit.

The other common issue is that there is a metal strip just below the flame holes that leaks enough gas to give a little flame all along to prevent the main flames lifting off. I had to replace my grill because the supply to the plate was blocked.
