I don't have gas on my boat. It's impractical to arrange anywhere to stow it. However, I saw this picture and article on the catalina 38 website, basically a mobo fender bracket with a small bottle in it, and I thought it looked like a good solution. Would it be legal in the UK does anyone think. If it is, I will have a Taylors stove for sale this winter (and will be replacing my cabin headlining!)

[/ QUOTE ] Nothing is actually illegal I think you'll find (for privately owned and used boats) . It is only on inland waterways where regulations are enforced.

It is common to carry a cylinder on deck.

However check what the Boat safety scheme has to say. Ok it applies to inland waterways but is the only yardstick you can use.

I would want to provide some protection for the regulator etc and devise some anti theft arrangements.

You could always fit fire resistant headlining above the galley and keep the Taylors stove. I have the galley area lined in aluminium sheet even with gas.

Entirely legal, and safe. One of the best arrangements for gas going.

I have just sold my old boat with a Taylors and teh new boat has an unsafe gas installation below decks. The bottles will be moved to open footed lockers on deck.

It will meet regs and makes a lot of sense, but Calor and butane cylynders are not SS (or anodised Ally) this side of the pond so will corrode like mad. Thier problems not yours i think.

health and safety has this to say:
"Never store the cylinders near to a heat source or in direct sunlight."

[/ QUOTE ]Er, so the galvanised mesh storage cages which most marinas use are dangerous then? I think not.

Have seen small bottles placed inside converted stainless steel fire extinguisher cases and fixed to the rail, quite legal and practical with a flat round top complete with a small padlock and shut off tap.

People I know who do this have Sunbrella covers made to keep the sun off.

You'll need to keep an eye out for earlier than expected degrading of the tubing, but that's easy enough to change.

If anyone mentions Health and chuffin' Safety again, I'll blow my top!

BTW it looks like an excellent idea to me, too. Only change I'd make is to hang the rig INSIDE the rail so there is less risk of knocking it or getting it knocked, e.g. w/someone's anchor when they're mooring.

Thanks all. I should have said I do have to make the boat comply with the BSS because I'm about to keep it in a fresh water harbour.

Cylinders in free air are safe, and in lockers are potentially unsafe however good the locker is and its seals.
If you are worried about "sunlight" then visit a DIY shed and pick up a stainless steel pedal bin, or in my base bread bin. Mount them on the pushpit, and the only downside is the question - why do you keep that rubbish bin on the pushpit with funny orange hose coming out?

I'm just wondering if there is an issue with UV and rubber gas hoses? UV attacks most plastics and some almost fall apart in no time.

So every dealer who stores full cannisters in an external cage (required for safety) and in full sunlight (apparently not legal) should be shut down? Plus all the trucks that deliver cannisters in open topped vehicles.....

I see gold plate again.......can the ludicrous arm of the H & S E be far behind..?

[/ QUOTE ] I guess they are not natural rubber, but may still not like UV, Neoprene doesn't.

It would be wise to inspect them regularly and definitely not exceed the normal recommended service life.
