I was under the impression the 3 way fridges were for caravans and motor homes and from specs tend to use nearly twice as much power as a marine unit ?
What does "tried to get the level right " mean?

I suspect that the igniter isn't close enough to the 'flame' area so struggles to ignite. The fridge does though need to be level for the flame to heat the thermal cutout, etc and then work. Not to sure what boat you have but my gas fridge works quite well on my cat and at rest it is fairly level when looked at.
