Gas Engineer, Portsmouth area

Any recommendations for a boat gas engineer in the Portsmouth area (well, Wicor, to be specific)? I've finally bitten the bullet and splashed out on a Spinflo cooker to replace the old Flavel Vanessa, and it needs connecting up with a new flexible hose.

Also - is a gas-safe certificate needed or advisible for a privately-owned boat, rather than a school or charter one?

Thanks BTW, for past forum threads about how to arrange the pivots for this cooker swap - it really was surprisingly simple.

Gas Check Marine were the frequently recommended people in the area. they have now been taken over by Apollo Gas http://www.apollogas.co.uk/ No adverse reports about them.

Unless your insurance company asks for a certificate you dont need one for a privately owned boat

If you are competent to make the necessary joints you are free to install the cooker yourself

My last boat (still at Wicor) was Gas Safe certified, but only because the Insurance company (N&G) wanted it.

It was an item that I regarded as a 'coverall' that was in the survey, recommending that the gas installation should be inspected & certified. Oh well, at least I knew it was as safe as gas on a small boat can get. The insurance co. did actually want a copy of the certificate too, although I believe that it is only mandatory for boats using inland waterways (and I've never thought of Wicor as particularly inland).

Thank you both for the replies. I've contacted Mr Apollo (*) and will check with N&G (I'm insured with them too) whether they require a certificate or no.

+1 for Gas Check Marine. Used them a couple of years ago to replace hoses and safety certificate. Good service and as per quote etc..
