Thanks to all who responded to my original post, especially stephenh with the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations. In the end I carried just one cylinder in checked baggage and separate from lifejacket, and declared it. So what happened......?
On the outward journey - nothing.
On the return journey, I was recalled by security and asked to transfer it to hand baggage, which I did.
So not a major hassle by and large, tho' La Rochelle is a big place for sailing and it's probably happened before!
On the subject of La Rochelle, if going from the airport to the new marina at Port des Minimes, go to Vieux Port and take the water bus the rest of the way (every half hour in summer, Eur 1.70). Quicker and cheaper - and who'd go overland if they can go on water?
