Yes, they are. Beware though that Canada does (or at least did) not require an Overflow Protection Device (OPD) on its bottles, but if you buy one without in Canada they will refuse to fill it in the USA.

Incidentally European and North American fittings also seem to work with one another, though technically European are metric and the North American ones are not. So European propane bottles can be filled by US/Canadian pumps, and the regulators interchanged.

However as well as an OPD the bottle must be clearly stamped with three things: the certification date, the empty weight ('TW') and the water capacity weight ('WC'). European originated bottles give these in kilogrammes which is the cause of much confusion in the USA. UK Calor gas bottles do not show these and so will be refused for refilling.

Butane bottles are not interchangeable in the same way. But these are rare in North America.

USA came up with overfill rules first! I could not legally get a Canafian bottle filled in the States as no safety device fitted. Now same rules for both. Fillers may also check whether bottles are in date for test.
