Does anyone know the dimensions of gas bottles (propane) around the world???

The mooses' lovely gas locker was purpose made to fit 2 Calor Gas 3.9Kg Propane bottles very snuggly and securely. Unfortunately the smallest bottles that they have found in la belle France, Kubies and Twinnys, are 3cm too big for Petit Bateaux. If the Kubie size is available in other countries the locker can be extended.

Any ideas??

Yep! throw the gas cooker over the side, and get a nice Origo Alcohol stove! No more fuel supply probs, and a lot safer! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You are going to find the same problem elsewhere. In the Americas and Asia, commonest is the US type bottle. The smallest is a similar diameter but too high to fit in a purpose-built holder. I once sawed the top handle off one to make it fit, but then some places were reluctant to refill a hacked about bottle.

As you can get UK Calor gas bottles refilled most places in the world, get one or two extra and rely on them for your travels. The only other place I know that uses this type of bottle is South Africa.

A 2kg Camping-Gas bottle will always fit (loosely), these or ones similar are available in Africa and former French colonies as well as Europe, but buying gas in small quantities does tend to be expensive.

Depends what you mean by 'around the world'.

Across the Atlantic the norm is to buy your own bottles and get them re-filled. In Europe it's difficult to get anything but exchange bottles and no one will exchange another company's bottles. If you are staying in one or two countries you can invest in local bottles otherwise you're stuck with Camping Gaz in small quantities at silly prices. Most of the bottles I've seen for exchange in Europe are similar in size to Calor 15kg size.

Not so much anymore. Most places here in the US do exchanges now also. You can still find places to fill your bottles, but you need an OPD valve on your tank.

I have two 6 kg bottles in my HR. I can fit one 20# tank in the locker, but not two. I'm still looking for a place to convert my EU 6 kg tanks to OPD valves before I run out of the gas I bought in the Azores.

If you ever do cross the Atlantic via the tradewind route, and Barbados is your first landfall, you need have no worries about obtaining gas here.
The gas depot here has fittings and adaptors that can fill just about any gas bottle known to man, and calor gas bottles especially are a doddle for them. We have 3 x 4.5 kg butane bottles, and I have been taking them (along with various bottles from around the world belonging to visiting yachties) to this depot for the last 8 years.
And the best bit is that the cost of filling these bottles is less than half the cost of the same amount of gas in England.....

Re Smiffy's alcohol stove - some pals on an American Cal 36 stopped in here earlier this year after crossing the pond - they have an alcohol stove, and they found that the best fuel by far is locally distilled rum - it is pure alcohol after it comes out of the still, and before it is blended / diluted / flavoured etc.

They also found that the Jack Iron rum sold in Carriacou in the Grenadines for human consumption works well in their stove...... yes, Jack Iron is rather powerful stuff......

There-ya are see! Fringe benefits as well! Hic (pardon me) /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
