My 12 year old Garmin map 76 gps appears to have packed up yesterday suddenly. One minute working fine, the next not able to acquire satellites. I was using it plugged in with outboard running and had removed its AA batteries after bad experience with leak on boat torch.

My phone picked up satellites fine.

Outboard does cause a lot of interference on vhf (suggestions for suppressing please?) but was connected to 12v lead acid battery.

Probably not worth having repaired. Have tried off/on batteries in/out etc and will open and check connections etc.

Anything else I can try? Haven't got as far as looking for reset button.

There is a reset procedure but don't know what it is at the moment as my manual is on board. Incidently I inquired about updating the charts but the cost was HUGE! So downloaded the Navionics app to my tablet (about £50 for the whole of uk & Holland) and it's excellent! Much better than the R******* plotter on my friends boat when we were sailing in Scotland. Used on a trip to Holland a couple of weeks ago and only used thr Yeoman plotter just to confirm position on a paper chart.

The problem with tablets and phones is daylight visibility, robustness and battery. I have Samsung Galaxy and using Viewranger (primarily a walking app) or Navfree (Car Satnav) it is difficult to see in bright sunlight, eats the battery, and it gets very hot. Even plugged in I have doubts whether the battery maintains it charge using these apps. Hardly surprising since bluetooth, phone, wifi & gps are all running.

My Garmin has resurrected itself today. I selected stored without battery option on power up and it found some satellites.

Sailing on lakes, Viewranger is quite useful, for its detailed maps of surroundings and topography.

You may have to leave it for a while for it to work out where the satellites are, I mean anything up to an hour. It isn't at its best lying down, it's supposed to be best at about 45 degrees to the horizontal.
