Garmin Interface

I have just purchased a Garmin 232 Chartplotter. Rather than install the supplied antenna can I take an NMEA feed from my existing MLR GPS . How will the Garmin respond not having its ownn signal (time of day etc)?

If you set it up to send and receive NMEA it should work with an outside signal as well.
