I have recently purchased a Garmin GPSMAP 276C to replace my Garmin GPS76. I am having great trouble connecting it to my Cobra MR F55 DSC VHF. I used to connect my GPS76 without any problem.

I have connected the Blue (Com1 out) and black (negative) wire from the 276 to the DSC and set Com1 Out to be NMEA but get nothing??

I have checked with a multimeter the output accross these wires and get nothing whereas on the 76 I get a varying DC voltage up to 5v.

Any suggestions or help would appreciated. I have sent an email to Garmin but have not had particularly good replies from them in the past so am not holding out much hope.

Hiya!

First take a look at the following threads HERE and HERE. The threads are for different radios however, the problem is the same and it may shed light on your situation.

After my experience with the 276c make sure of the following:

1) Ensure the Garmin 276 is switched to communicate NMEA/NMEA - the manual will tell you how, if you have no manual you can download it from Garmins web site HERE.
2) Ensure your wiring is ok, some radios come with really thin connecting wires and don't make a proper connection.
3) Ensure the firmware is up to date on the Garmin - mine was 5 versions out!
4) Ensure you have sat acquisition (sp?) the 276C will not transmit the NMEA sentence unless it has this.

and finally...

5) Don't give up, the 276c does transmit NMEA and it most certainly works with the NASA radio so it should work with the Cobra.

Hope this helps!
