Now (after 18 months) finally back on the water, and one changes from construction to operation! I am trying to connect the boat GPS (Garmin 152) to EasyGPS in order to upload waypoints. EasyGPS will do this with a handlheld (Magellen) GPS seamlessly. However, when setting up the connection to the Garmin GPS, it only offers the option to connect at 9600 baud. My GPS 152 is stuck on 4800 baud. Can anyone suggest:

A. how to shift the GPS 152 onto 9600 baud. I have actually read the manual, and it is not apparent to this pilgrim how you do so!
B. An equally capable programme to Easy GPS. (ie, allows me to sit at home and input Waypoints to my home PC which I can then export to stick for uploadingn onto the boat PC)?

I've got a Garmin 152. I've been fiddling with the settings to try to connect it to my VHF so hopefully the following will help you. I am typing this from memory so it may not be totally correct.

With the GPS running press MENU twice. Then scroll down the left hand list of options to get to COM. Using the circular control move right to highlight the top option eg NMEA IN/OUT. Press ENTER and it comes up with a list of options. Choose one with the ENTER button and scroll down to the box below. Some of these allow you to change the baud rate but some don't. I'm sure some of these allow you to choose 9600.

The Garmin manual is not clear about baud change, but it does look like data transfer baud rates can be altered. My set is down on the boat so I can not verify, or you could either use another program such as GPSU or use Franson GPSGate to provide the virtual ports on your computer. The latter I see is now free for up to 2 ports, you can select input and output baud speeds and run more applications using GPS at the same time, it works well.

It's quite easy to change the baud on a Garmin.

On the Garmin go to the Com menu and change to Garmin Data Transfer.

EasyGPS is designed to use this Garmin proprietary protocol.

Then you need to remember to change it back to NMEA/4800 to talk to all the boaty bits on board.
