The wiring diagram to connect NMEA is on page 50 of the manual for the ST1000+:
http://www.raymarine.com/raymarine/SubmittedFiles/Handbooks/Autopilots/ST1000and2000plus.pdf
Pin out for the Garmin 12 on page 53 of the manual at http://www.garmin.com/manuals/101.pdf
Plug and lead from Global Positioning Systems at http://www.globalpositioningsystems.co.uk/accessories.php?product_id=33
or GPS Warehouse at http://www.gpsw.co.uk/relitems.html?ProdID=11
I've connected my 120XL but not my 12 to the ST1000+ so far but I'm sure the wiring is exactly the same. It works pretty well but make sure the GPS interface is set to NMEA/NMEA

I think you will find that the ST1000 wil only recognise SeaTalk, not NMEA0183.

To recognise NMEA you need the ST1000+.

If I am right you will need the Raymarine Box which converts NMEA to SeaTalk before connecting. About £130 I'm afraid.
