I have to replace my chartplotter/radar unit, and am looking at the Raymarine C120 v/s Garmin 4012. Both approx. the same price. Has anyone any comments, espescially about the Garmin? Would be much appreciated.

I looked at the new Garmin Range at SIBS and was very impressed with them. They are an amazing piece of kit and now fully integrated due to NMEA.

A bit OTT for what I needed so I got the 550S.

Cheers

Imho, the Garmin 4xxx series is functionally in a much higher gear than the C and E series. I've played with one and like it's predecessors is just so intuitive to use compared to the C/E series. The touch screen 5xxx series are too pricey for now imho. Furuno's new NaxNet is also inspiring, but imho Garmin win out on functional power combined with the best user interface in the business.

Getting waypoints and routes in and out of Garmin kit is simplicity yet powerful editing and planning available.

canger: the 4012 is a nice unit. i like the e and c series too. hard call. if you are going to get a Garmin, for a little bit more you can get the 5012, which is a touch screen. I find this is easier to use in the rough. the rotary keys on both the garmins and raymarine are a little bit much. the 5012, you can just point to where you want to go and what you want to see. There are all kinds of rebates with furuno, garmin, and raymarine. Deep cuts, so now's the time to buy. ring me up if you are interested.
